The GTR-X 230 is the latest addition to Sea-Doo’s high performance line, hence the “X” in the name. While this doesn’t have the biggest engine, nor the highest horsepower, it belongs in the category.

Acceleration in sport mode is like flipping on a light switch. In less than two seconds you’re shooting past thirty miles per hour and it only takes about seven seconds to hit the top speed of 67-68.

Cruising in the 40s is very comfortable in any condition thanks in large part to the very forgiving moderate-V GTI hull. I charged through chop of dozens of watercraft in a rocky gorge with waves coming from every direction and, though it went against every instinct, I kept hard on the throttle and charged through at 45-50 miles per hour to see how it handled. I’m fairly confident the Sea-Doo could have taken more, but that was enough proof for me.

Of course if you want to slow down and play around, whipping in and out of turns to kick up some splash, the GTR-X 230 can do that just fine. The ErgoLock system helps here. The angled foot wedges and knee cutouts in the seat hold you firmly in place, couple that with adjustable handlebars and you are locked in to a comfortable position as you rev the Rotax engine to shoot you in, or out of, tight turns.

Even at the dock it looks like it’s racing with a slick design that’s both angular and sleek.

There are some great engineering touches too. This isn’t just a beast engine wrapped in green. The lifting strakes, the narrower two level racing seat with hand grips for passenger and the handlebars with palm rests for long rides all show the influence of avid PWC riders in the design of the GTR-X.

There’s a total storage capacity of 30 gallons or 116 litres. The largest storage area is at the bow with a removable bucket-style carrier. Under the seat is an access area to the Rotax 1500 HO ACE performance powerhouse.

You don’t have to be a Lamborghini to be a legitimate sports car, and you don’t need 300-horsepower to warrant the X on your Sea-Doo. One short rip on the GTR-X 230 is all the proof you’ll need.
