A native of Canada, Norm Cross was a design engineer by profession. In the 1950s he began designing multihull sailing craft, the first of which were catamarans. He began full time multihull development in 1968. His work, and its involvement in the evolution of modern multihull design, is possibly one of the greatest contributions by any single designer of multihull sailing craft to date.
The Norm Cross 48 is arguably one of his finest designs in terms of overall dimensional aesthetics, cruising comfort and sailability. The quality of SULIS's construction is also superb. The hulls are cold molded, using WEST System epoxy and employing a total saturation technique with marine grade Philippine mahogany plywood which is double diagonal planked over stringers and frames of Douglas fir.
Her rig is simple, strong and versatile. She sports a full-batten main in a Stack-Pac arrangement and roller-furling on her jib and cutter. Her deck is huge which allows for safe and comfortable access when moving about her topsides and her cockpit is deep and safe for those times when you find yourself in heavier weather.
Her interior layout is also simple. As you enter through her companionway, there is a full galley to port and a nav station to starboard. Her dinette is on the centerline with a fold-out table and two settees on either side. She has two large double berths, one to starboard and one to port and her head and workshop area is forward in the typical v-berth area.
SULIS is currently stored indoors for the winter on her custom storage trailer. She is a very capable and well-found vessel. If you are looking for a cruising trimaran to take you safely off into the sunset, then SULIS should be on your must-see list of yachts for consideration.
