Polar Kraft has a long-standing tradition of building quality aluminum fishing boats at a great price. For 2012, they’re introducing a new Frontier series, which will feature six new models. Last fall, I had the chance to test one of them - the Frontier 189 Walk Thru.

At 17 feet, 11 inches, the Frontier 189 is a perfect mid-sized fisher that will be at home on almost any lake. And with a 99-inch beam, you get a very solid footprint for not only space, but on the running surface as well.

It’s a clean and simple boat that gives you plenty of fishing features with room to option it out as much as you like. Polar Kraft has always done a great job with its helms, offering smart layouts that include at-hand switches and clutter-free gauge clusters.

What I like about this boat is the open floor plan. There are plenty of seat bases to configure your layout and even a raised base on the aft bench. It’s in said bench that you will find a dividable port side livewell and access to battery and oil to starboard.

Storage is big in this boat, whether it’s in both gunwales (that can act as a step as well) or in the bow. But the major home run is the nine-rod locker found in the midship.

This boat is also a blast to drive. It rockets onto plane instantly and hits 25mph before you can even reach for the trim. The Frontier 189 is a scrappy boat that can handle the chop incredibly well. No matter if you’re running directly into it or taking it across, this boat skips across and never loses its footing.

The 150-hp Evinrude on our test boat is a best-case scenario. You could also easily opt for 115 and still get tons out of the hull.

I like when manufacturers add to their lineup. To me, it shows their working to build you a great boat. In this economy, it also shows confidence. And, as we found out, the boat itself isn’t too bad either.
