What I've always loved most about time on the water with family and friends is that it is absolute, hands down quality time. There’s nothing quite like boating for creating memories with loved ones. Of course, not all fun looks the same so there are a variety of boats to choose from, but pontoons are probably one of the go-to boats for families looking for a versatile vessel to fish, cruise and enjoy the water.

As far as pontoons go, the Sun Tracker Bass Buggy was one of the industry’s first. Since 1983, the company has been adapting and improving this family fishing classic. For 2012, the Bass Buggy 18 DLX is all new.

It’s still an easy-to-handle 20 feet long, but that’s the only thing that remains unchanged. With fishing a top priority, there are two livewells, plenty of rod holders and rocket launchers, and three fishing seats enclosed inside the fenced deck. There is also a trolling motor plug at the bow with a raised front gate to fit the motor.

When you’re cruising, the roomy L-shaped lounge with table provides a great space to relax or enjoy a quick bite. Underneath the seating there is more storage for gear. And, for those times you decide to drop anchor for a dip on a hot day, the aft boarding platform with non-skid surface and oversized ladder with large handrails make it easy.

What’s really great about the pontoon as a family fishing boat is there are no deep gunwales to get over when boarding. Grandma, grandpa and the kids can all enter from a level dock, with the fenced deck still offering lots of security.

Out on the water, the Bass Buggy 18 doesn’t razzle and dazzle with flashy performance, but that’s not what this boat is all about. With two logs and a 40-hp motor, comfortable cruising is around 9 to 10mph - perfect for a nice day out passing on your love of fishing to the kids or simply soaking in the sun on a lazy cruise around the lake. And with such an affordable price tag, you can add the optional trailer and take this Sun Tracker wherever your next family get together may be. Now that’s truly unfettered family fun.
