By Matt SpencerAs North America works itself out of this recession, we in the boating industry are starting to see some major changes. One of the major ones is the growing popularity of the deck boat. Making note of this, Bayliner realized they had the resources and ability to adapt. I spent some time with their all-new 215 Deck Boat.

Although Bayliner actually helped create the deck boat industry, they have grown away from it as of late. The addition of the 215 DB shows the company is responding to many customers caring less about top speed and more about how many friends and family they can fit in the boat for the day.

With a capacity of 12, there is lots of room for everyone when you’re on the hook in a cove. The bow on the 215 is like another boat in itself. There’s lots of storage up there, and Bayliner has even included cool dividers to keep your gear organized.

The portside console hides a head and the sun pad has two back rests that fold up into chairs. So if gas prices are going up, you can just spend more time on the boat at rest.

Bayliner owners also care about two things: simplicity and customization. Take the refreshment table for example. It folds out of the starboard gunwale in two movements, just flip it up and the support arm folds out. It doesn’t get any simpler than that. For customization, consider the Flight Package with its forward monster tower, Bimini and awesome graphics. It really completes the package.

The 215 DB comes standard with the 220-hp MerCruiser 4.3 MPI. This provides more than enough power to go wakeboarding, and it even kicks up a decent wake. If you upgrade to the 260-hp 5.0, you’re going to have a killer watersports boat.

But Bayliner wants their boats to be “AND” boats. Basically fishing AND skiing or wakeboarding AND cruising. Well you can do all of those things with the 215 DB. It’s fun, sporty, has lots of room AND it’s a deck boat.
