By Matt SpencerIf dad had his way, he would have his ultimate fishing machine in the driveway. But if mom and the kids had their way, they would have a fun, ready-to-rock sport boat that they could swim, ski and relax on. This is why aluminum fish-and-skis have become so popular. It allows families to maximize their time and money with one boat. Polar Kraft knows this all too well, so they are introducing the Kodiak Sport 170 FS for 2013.

Polar Krafts are already known for their impressive fishing machines, which come with great value. Well, don’t think the 170 FS is any different because it’s a crossover. You’re still getting a true deep-V boat for rough water, as well as a nice 96-inch beam that provides a great footprint for interior space and stability.

There’s also a Minn Kota trolling motor, bait well and live well, along with locking rod storage; all major sellers for fishermen. But when it’s family time, just throw in the optional bow cushions to make a great forward lounge and fold up the jump seats from the rear casting deck.

Polar Kraft offers some versatility in how you choose to make this boat your own as well. The red of the test boat was definitely sharp, but it’s only one of eight exterior/interior colours to choose from.

I’ve always enjoyed the ride of a Polar Kraft (and I’ve tested plenty to know). The riveted hull on the Kodiak Sport 170 FS offers up a soft and stable ride. It will handle rough water no problem, and the full windshield is a nice feature should you need some cover from the elements.

This boat cruises no problem in the 20-plus mph range for wakeboard speeds, and it hits 30 and beyond for those who like to slalom. The Yamaha F115 is a powerful do-it-all motor that could even pull dad out of the water if he wants to ski!
