By Mike MilneSpecialized watersports tow boats have always been a careful blend of technology, performance and creature comfort. But few tow boats can focus on just one sport these days.
The Supra Sunsport 242 is built to provide speed management and wakes that will work for tournament-level water-skiers, wakeboarders and wake surfers. It also accommodates up to 17 people, so you can please a crowd of varying skill levels at the cottage.

The 242’s V-drive inboard makes space for a huge J-shaped cockpit seating area. The comfortable bow compartment adds more lounging space, 16 drink holders and a built-in cooler ensure everyone stays hydrated, and the GPS-based SupraVision Touch control system keeps a long list of rider pre-sets ready to go. Preferences for ballast levels, speed and wake shape can be recorded and easily replicated. The advanced electronics makes the driver’s job a bit less complex, while the helm seat heater adds shoulder- season comfort.

Our test boat had the “Worlds” option package, which includes a Supra Progressive Tower with four speakers, two extra amplifiers and a subwoofer, plus board racks, custom swim deck and hull graphics.

Supra’s Indmar Assault 345 catalytic converter-equipped V8 engine comes standard, along with a 1,700-pound Gravity III ballast system. The boat has what’s called a Deep Drop B keel hull, which provides a sharp entry (for comfort in choppy water and great tracking) that morphs into a flatter multi-level bottom aft, then a Smartplate wake plate.

The plate forms the various wake patterns required by skiers, wakeboarders and wake surfers, while a pair of fins provide sharp tracking and turning. The 242 planes easily, reaching 20 mph in 4.3 seconds and 30 mph in less than seven seconds.

Top speed on a chilly test day was 40.2 mph at 5200 rpm, with cruising or towing speeds ranging from 24.2 mph to 32.9 mph. The Zero Off GPS Cruise Control ensures all riders will get the speed they want, while hose-mounted heaters will help them warm up.

With tunes and heat blasting, the 242 is sure to attract a crowd any time during the skiing, riding and surfing season.
