By Mike MilneBased in the seemingly unlikely town of Neodesha, Kansas, Cobalt Boats has earned a reputation as one of the world's best runabout builders. With the trend towards ever-larger day boats, Cobalt's bowriders now range up to just shy of 33 feet.

But Cobalt creates much more usable cockpit space without added length with its new R series. At 25 feet, 8 inches, the new R5 is a big bowrider to begin with, but its main cockpit has 95 inches of usable interior width in a boat with an overall beam of 102 inches -- the maximum trailerable width.

There's room for a luxurious helm seat, double-wide companion seat with a flip-flop backrest (one of five potential single or double lounges), wraparound aft seating to port and a single seat aft to starboard.

There are roomy walk-throughs forward and aft, with a lounge and wraparound seat to port and another convertible lounge to starboard. Aft, the rear bench seat back can be flopped to create a big double lounge or a cushion can be pulled up to create a double seat facing the swim platform.

Aft, the R5 has Cobalt's exclusive and innovative SwimStep incorporated into the swim platform (with Sof-Trac mat covering), allowing an easy step into or out of the water.

There's a spacious enclosed head compartment in the companion console, complete with lighting, exhaust fan, sink and pump-out head. The test boat has snap-in Sea Grass sisal floor mats over the fibreglass non-skid decks. An electric windlass makes anchoring effortless and unique clips make fender placement a snap. Fit and finish are beyond reproach.

Comfortable at rest, the R5 also runs quickly and smoothly, powered by a 375-hp Volvo Penta 8.1 Gi V-8 sterndrive, pushing a twin-prop DuoProp. Top speed is 53.8mph at 4750 rpm, with cruising speeds from 30 to 40mph in the 3000 to 4000 rpm range. The R5's beefy Kevlar-reinforced 21-degree deadrise hull ensures comfort and confidence in all water and wave conditions. The hull and DuoProp drive provide quick and confident handling in turns.

Wherever you are going, in whatever conditions (even rain and wind, like our test day), Cobalt’s R5 will take you in comfort and style.
