By Matt SpencerWhen a boat builder introduces a new line, it’s usually to fill a hole in the lineup. With Princecraft’s new-for-2012 Xpedition line, it’s more than that. These new, wider models - tucked nicely between their DLX and Pro lines -allow the company to try out some new things as well.

For our test, I got my hands on an Xpedition 170 SC (side console), which is also available in back troller and WS (full windshield) models. This 17-foot boat has a substantial beam for its size and makes full use of it, with such features as the five-rod locker in the portside gunwale. These very same gunwalesmake good steps as well.

There’s more storage between the two folding jump seats in the aft deck and in the bow. And, as you would expect, there are livewells in both the bow and stern.

Perhaps the most noteworthy feature on this boat, though, is the standard “PrinceTrak” system. You can picture it like tracks on each side of the boat, similar to what a Bimini would attach to. Only in this case you can use it for any accessory you can think of - cup holders, rod holders or a cockpit caddy.

The Xpedition 170 SC has Princecraft’s great reverse chine hull that planes very quickly and is stable at all speeds (and even when sitting still). It’s as fun to run at 25 to 30 mph as it is at full throttle. The extra wide beamgives you more stability in the turns, but then seems to shrink when you climb up in speed. It’s a crisp running boat that will make for as great a family vessel as it will a serious fishing machine.

Princecraft’s lineup is varied and quiet expansive, so when they introduce new models they can take what works in others and apply it to the new ones. Princecraft has obviously tried some new things in the design of its Xpedition 170 SC so that there will always be room for you to try new things on the water.
