By Mike GridleyAs Regal had a hit with its 5260 Sport Yacht, the predecessor to its newest sport coupe, you'd expect the same for the 53. But Regal has exceeded expectations with a cruiser that truly surpasses the oftentimes overused "New and Improved" marketing tag.

Regal's corporate captain, Frank Stoeber, pointed out at this year's Miami International Boat Show that the new 53 Sport Coupe is not just a reworking. This
is an all-new luxury yacht from tip to tail - everything has been addressed, including the hull design, power, technology, amenities and usability. For years,
the company has sought input from owners' groups and the features and functionality on the 53 reflect that ongoing commitment.

At the transom, the boat incorporates amassive swim platform and a comfortable bench seat with built-in storage. There's also a hidden swim ladder, recessed cleats, a shower, stereo speakers and LED lights. At the touch of a button, the top deck of the swim platform, the bench seat and transom open to provide the best access to an engine roomon the water. But more on that space later.

Six moulded steps lead up to the open cockpit, which Regal has aptly named the "Aft Patio." Four seating layouts are offered to ensure this entertaining
space fits your individual style. You can further customize by adding optional features like an electric grill for the wetbar, an icemaker or pillows packages. You'll definitely want to opt for the SureShade retractable awning. A nice final touch would be to upgrade the cockpit table to the electric pedestal model with filler cushions.

Transitioning into the enclosed cockpit space or upper salon is seamless with the glass doors and level cockpit sole. A window drops down on the port side,
opening up the interior even more - perfect for enjoying the optional cockpit bar and seating.

The glass-enclosed cockpit eliminated the hassles of dealing with canvas and makes this area a refined all-weather salon. Open the glass doors and aft window, slide open the sunroof and the side window, and let the breeze flow through. Reverse-cycle air conditioning will take care of the hot and cool days on the water. With its panoramic view at rest and underway, this is where you will spend a lot of time relaxing and entertaining. To port, a U-shaped settee and table face the upper galley with refrigerator and wine steward. To make this space your own, Regal offers several options, including various upholstery types and colours, flooring, blinds, entertainment systems, and a 50-inch TV that powers up out of the upper galley.

The standard twin helm seat is electrically adjustable; opt for the electric lift to really settle in comfortably. Seated or leaning, the captain has an excellent
view while underway. Technology rules at the helmwith the latest Glass Helm from Garmin, which is comprised of twin 8212 touchscreen displays. Other
equipment includes twin SmartCraft digital propulsion system displays, a Garmin VHF, a stereo remote, and red night lighting twin wipers and defoggers.

A centrally located sliding door provides access down into the main salon and galley. Stretching across the full beam with nearly seven feet of headroom,
and boasting large hull-side windows, hatches and recessed lighting, this is an airy and bright space - especially for an express coupe. To starboard, a large
settee and high-low table face the expansive galley and 32-inch TV with Bose home theatre system.
The galley was definitely designed by a team that spends time aboard. Appliances include a full-sized Sub-Zero refrigerator and two-drawer freezer, icemaker, convectionmicrowave, and two-burner cooktop. Add the dishwasher; you deserve it. The standard cherry cabinetry has ample cupboard and storage space, while cabinets above the settee add to the capacity. For your convenience, Regal also includes the dishware and flatware.
Aft of the salon is the luxurious full-beam master stateroom, where cherry cabinetry flanks an Olympic Queen island berth. Multiple drawers and hanging lockers ensure room for all of your clothing and possessions. Swap out one of the two low dressers for a love seat if you'd prefer. Large hull-side windows, bright finishes and extensive lighting work magic on this stateroom.
The master head is comprised of two compartments, the toilet and vanity with vessel sink to port and the shower compartment with teak grate flooring to starboard. Options continue with a wide range of finishes, cabinetry, counters, bedding and flooring available for this area.
Forward, Regal offers owners a choice of three layouts: a single VIP stateroom with island pedestal berth, a single stateroomwith a starboard double berth and a portside upper single bunk, or two staterooms - a single forward with the option of either of the first two layouts and an additional third side cabin with high-over-low bunks. The well-appointed head has a vanity with glass vessel sink, acrylic shower enclosure and private access fromthe VIP stateroom.

When ordering your 53 Sport Coupe it will take you some time to make your selections of cabinet finishes, countertops, flooring, upholstery, and d├ęcor accents and colours. The list of system and other extras and options is extensive as well.

The power offering for the 53 is new as well - twin 550-hp Cummins QSB6.7 diesels with Zeus pod drives. Access to the engine compartment is either through a day hatch in the cockpit or the massive transom garage door. Headroom is an impressive eight feet. A quick survey of this space confirms Regal's commitment to offering the best technology and systems available with items such as self-cleaning strainers, a manifold that has a single thru-hull delivering water to the air conditioning systems and generator, and a CharlesMarine IsoBoost 50 Transformer to condition sometimes unreliable shore power. The long list of options even includes SeaKeeper Stabilizing.

While we did not get to run the 53 Sport Coupe, pod drives are a joy to have and with more than 1000-hp on tap Regal confirmed top speed would exceed 32 knots.
