By Matt SpencerLast year, Rinker Boats launched the all-new Captiva 236 BR to great acclaim. It was part of an ongoing overhaul of their Captiva bowrider sport boats, but they had yet to address an important market segment -- cuddies. Canadian and international dealers had been pleading for a new cuddy and Rinker has delivered for 2014.

The Captiva 236 Cuddy sat at the dock with a white hull and deck and blast blue accenting stripe down the side. Inside employed the same colour scheme, giving this boat a bright and fun appearance. With the use of an aft sweeping sheer line and in gel style lines, the 236 cuddy is quite stylish for a boat category that isn't always so.

Inside the 236 Cuddy is packed with functionality. At the swim pad is a hidden trash receptacle, a fold-up rear lounge and a starboard walk-through.

The rear bench seat has cooler storage underneath, along with a nifty trap door that allows access through the cushion. This bench seat turns into a U-shaped lounge as two seats almost magically fold out of the gunwales. Pull one tab and they slide out, pull another and they disappear, simple as that.

But the true stand out is the brand new cuddy design that features the most room I've seen on a boat this size. Two could easily overnight on the berth, which provides more than seven feet of space to lie down. Behind the berth, next to the bulkheads, are two seats you can relax on, one of which also holds the porta-potty. Storage is found under the berth and in various cabinets in the bulkheads.

The running performance of the 236 Cuddy was admirable, as you can see in the stats bar accompanying this review. It’s a well running boat that handles chop nicely, holds speed well and gets on plane at low speeds.

But this boat really shines on the inside. Both the cockpit and the cuddy are a complete home run. You will be able to take enough gear for the weekend, with room to spare, and have plenty of fun along the way.
