There’s been a trend toward big day-boats with minimal overnight accommodation in recent years.
The 26-foot Regal 2550 Cuddy may be on the small side of the trend (many of the day-boats in question are over 30 feet), but is well-positioned to provide day-boaters with a taste of the cruising lifestyle. Still, the 2550 leaves no doubt about its main mission: comfortable day-cruising with the option of an overnight stay.
There’s an enclosed head compartment with a pumpout marine toilet and a cuddy cabin with screened overhead hatch. It provides belowdecks seating that’s easily converted to a small berth. But the cockpit and open-air amenities are still the boat’s main focus.
There’s a power-operated arch that can be fitted with wakeboard racks, a pop-up tow-sports fitting, swiveling forward bucket seats, a spacious L-shaped aft lounge to port, a sink with entertainment centre behind the helm seat and an enormous sunlounge aft to port. The aft cockpit seat-back can be used to convert that sunpad into a chaise lounge.
The extended swim platform lets the boat’s crew get very close to the water.
The cockpit layout is spacious enough that an open bow compartment will not be missed. In its place is the opportunity to stay on the boat overnight. You won’t be hosting gourmet soirées on board, but a full canvas enclosure would turn the boat into a comfortable place to spend a night.
The boat’s 21-degree deadrise, stepped and ventilated FasTrac hull means the boat will reach its destination comfortably, speedily and economically. The hull’s easy-planing design, and the 300-hp Volvo Penta DuoProp drive, make for good acceleration: 0-30 mph in 7.4 seconds and 0-40 mph in just over 11 seconds.
Top speed is 50.4 mph at 5000 rpm. The boat cruises comfortably at 38 mph at 4000 rpm and 25 mph at 3000 rpm. So, if you choose not to stay for the night, you can get home quickly.
