Centre consoles these days come in an ever-widening range of configurations, but in their native habitat of Florida there are two major varieties, low-topside inshore bay boats and heftier offshores.
Just over 16 feet long, the Campion Explorer 492 CC may not be your first choice for a long offshore jaunt, but it’s certainly not a bay boat either. As befits its all-Canadian heritage, it’s a great compromise.
One of the 492’s best features is its layout, working well for a couple of dedicated anglers or a family. There are twin swivelling seats at the helm, with moulded plastic shells and comfortable upholstered seats and backs. A wide jump-seat forward of the console will handle a couple of kids and there’s room for overflow on the cushioned foredeck.
Anglers will find convenient vertical rod-holders along the gunnels just aft of the console. A sturdy stainless-steel grabrail surrounding the console windscreen also holds a couple of rocket-launcher style rod-holders. The test boat’s raw-water washdown system will keep everything clean.
The transom is low and open to make fishing easier and there’s plenty of fishing room forward. The gunnels are high”about mid-thigh”in the walkaround area and high stainless-steel bowrails add more safety.
A drained locker aft to starboard doubles as a bait-well. There’s more storage space under the seats, in the console and in large bow and floor lockers forward. A cooler under the bow console seat and the small swim deck aft to starboard will appeal to all boaters.
The hull’s modified-V APEX design expands high-pressure zones aft for easier planing and higher top speeds. The test boat, powered by a two-stroke 90-hp Evinrude 90 HO E-TEC outboard, is speedy in GPS testing.Top speed is 45.9 mph with cruising speeds of 22.4 mph and 28.4 mph. It’s also worth noting that the boat stays on plane to about 2,700 rpm.
For performance and comfort, the 492 will prove a capable platform for family boaters as well as dedicated anglers.
