The Crownline 18SS has been in production for a few years and has sold well in North America and internationally.

Its lines are smooth, with a consistent flow from the extended bow to transom. This clean look is accented by the stainless steel rub rail and the boat’s black over white colour scheme. The standard swim platform is clear without obstructions since the swim ladder is underneath and the pop-up cleats are on the gunnels.

Removable cushions in the centre of the sunpad and transom seat open up a walkthrough to save the upholstery. The sunpad rises on twin gas struts to access the MerCruiser sterndrive.

Cockpit space is good for an 18-foot boat, and the quality of the two-tone upholstery is above average. There is plenty ofroom in comfort for five between the transom seat and the twin sport seats. Full beam storage is a plus in the transom seat base with hinged cushion. While the sports seats are fully adjustable, only the captain’s has a bolster.

Underneath the snap in carpet is a decent sized ski locker for all of the large gear. Small items will fit in the glove box and in the side storage in thegunnels. Forconvenience there are eight stainless steel cupholders and solid stainless grab handles for front and rear passengers.

The bow has seating for five kids, or two adults lounging comfortably. Again there are more cupholders and grab handles and storage under the hinged cushions.

The helm is an automotive style molded vinyl pod with full instrumentation. The padded and stainless wheel tilts to find that just right position. Underway, a Fusion Marine stereo provides the tunes.

The 18 SS’s solid windshield system is made of curved glass, not plexi and the latch for the centre windshield section is stainless steel instead of a nylon strap and snap. All speak to Crownline’s approach.

The MerCruiser 4.3L V6 proved to be a good match. Acceleration times were respectable, although with some bow rise.
