For 2017, Yamaha isn't just entering the Rec-Lite PWC category they are looking to re-invent it with their EX series. This isn't a budget WaveRunner, it's just a slightly scaled down version. Unlike the competition, it's all fibreglass like the rest of the WaveRunner line.

In 2016, Yamaha introduced the 40 percent smaller, 20 percent lighter TR-1 engine that also has better fuel economy than the older MR-1. Well, that new powerplant is in this new, entry-level, line.

It certainly is a smooth and comfortable ride. One that you can get at a great price point - the base EX model starts at $8,799 ($6,599 US). That is as stripped down as you’ll get, but it still has the fiberglass hull, is a 3-up model and has the TR-1 engine.

The EX Sport has a few more options including side mirrors, mechanical reverse (the old-school pull handle) and reboarding step. While the EX Deluxe steps it up even further and replaces the mechanical reverse with the RiDE system - reverse and deceleration.

Even though it’s smaller than the top-selling VX line, the recreational category is very stable at idle and capable of tow sports with all models - each WaveRunner in the EX series has a tow hook.

Impressively, there is 29L (7.7 gal) of storage space between the bow, the glove box and the safety kit compartment under the seat cushion.

When pushed, the handling is a little looser than its higher-end WaveRunner cousins with a bit of sliding in turns, but all things considered that’s not a bad trade off. It’s not the HO (high output) version of the TR-1 but it’s still got plenty of juice. Acceleration to plane is nearly instantaneous.

With two colour options - grey and red or blue and white - and modern, but classic, WaveRunner lines, your neighbour won’t know this is the entry-level option.

In an era of high-performance, cutting-edge technological advancements, it’s nice to see more simple, affordable fun on the water back in style.
