Boston Whaler’s iconic Montauk line got an overhaul for the company’s 60th anniversary. Redesigned from the hull up, the new sharper keel and increased deadrise better cuts into the water. It cruises nicely around 20 miles per hour and, even with the low profile, can punch above its weight handling waves. I tested this boat in two to three foot wakes left behind by large yachts on Florida’s Intracoastal Waterway. The boat powered through and the wakes didn’t stab the bow.
On board, you’ll find a 17-inch interior freeboard and new low-profile stainless-steel hand rails as an option. Also new for 2018 is the single 12-gallon/45.2 L fuel tank, replacing the previous dual tank system. The livewell at the transom is a carry-over option, but new are the elective rod holders that can be mounted on either side. A nesting cut-out allows a secure spot for a bait bucket or free space when it is out.
The livewell and rod holders are part of the fishing package, as is the cooler seat and rod holders at the front of the console and the built-in tackle box storage on the console’s starboard side.
The console itself has a large port-entry and a grab rail that runs across the top of the windscreen. The pilot seat has a sturdy backrest that can be positioned in four different ways, including forward facing while driving, rear facing for lounging or used as a sturdy leaning post for stand-up driving.
At the bow, there’s a large anchor locker under the casting platform with optional bow cushions. On that note, there are also optional backrests and cushions for the transom jump seats, which will help make the run more comfortable for the six-person capacity.
Boston Whaler’s engineering team hit this one out of the park. This is one of the best small boats I’ve ever had the pleasure to test. Not a bad for a 60-year old!
