When it comes to iconic boat brands, Boston Whaler is tough to beat. And when it comes to iconic Whalers the Montauk is top of the list in the eyes of many, myself included. When I heard they were redesigning it from the hull up for the 60th Anniversary in 2018, I was nervous.

But from first look, with the classic Montauk lines, to first impressions underway I give Whaler full marks. Program manager, Spencer Traynom was actually on the docks at our test day in Fort Lauderdale, Florida so I asked him about the challenge of rebuilding a timeless brand.

“To see customers who are really familiar with the boat in the past, they come up to it and instantly recognize it as a Montauk even though they’ve never seen it before,” he said. “Touching a boat that has that much history in it, you’ve got to make sure you don’t mess it up and our team of designers and engineers really hit this one out of the park.”

There’s a sharper keel which gives more precise cornering and the now standard hydraulic steering makes the ride smooth like butter. The major upgrades are the fact that it’s bigger, by five-inches of beam, the fuel is now a 25-gallon (95 L) below-deck tank and there’s a fish box at the bow, behind the anchor locker.

There is a whack of options from steel rub rail upgrade, to bow rail cut-outs, bimini, ski tow arch and the fishing package. The fishing package, that was on our test boat, gives rod holders integrated into the centre console, a built-in two-slot tackle bow holder within the starboard side of the console, and the cooler seat with cushion.

The arch around the outboard isn’t just for show. With 115-horsepower, or even the base engine of 90-horsepower, you’ve got enough punch for tow sports. There are also multiple seating arrangement options including a full bow lounge, popular in the European market, and optional cushions for the jump seats at the transom.

Performance is as you’d expected from Whaler. Quiet as you slam through waves and a dry ride. With the 115-hp hitting a top speed of 46 miles per hour, the greatest range comes at 3,500 RPM, which translates to a theoretical range of approximately 150 miles. Impressive for a small centre console!

Mercury four-stroke, 115-horsepower, 2.1 L, 8-valve single overhead cam (SOHC) Inline 4, with computer controlled mutli-port electronic fuel injection
