For me, Glastron resurrects fond memories of a metal flake CVX-20 Jet I once saw as a kid, throwing a hundred foot rooster tails across the water, so when we travelled to Cadillac, Michigan to test the new GTD 200, I was already excited.

The combination of distinct hull lines with contrasting gelcoat is striking. Raked back dual console windshields might not be warm, but add to the feeling of speed. The cognac upholstery is gorgeous and luxurious. It’s the kind of interior you expect in an exotic sports car. For a deck boat, it has looks to kill.

Glastron’s GTD 200 and 205 share the same hull but differ in power packages. The outboard powered 200s are lighter and easier to maintain with the benefit of more cockpit space. The wraparound arena style seating can accommodate seven or eight people in the cockpit alone. A removable backrest allows an additional passenger to sit facing forward. These boats can be configured with single or dual consoles and an optional wraparound windshield. An innovative port side gunwale door allows easy access to the dock, handy for gearing up for the day.

The Evinrude 200 ETEC G2 powering our test boat matched the racy style. BRP has done an excellent job with the controls on these ETECs. The digital throttle is effortless, and the power steering has just the right amount of assist. These engines are quiet, but have a distinctive menacing rumble to them at idle. The low-end torque helped get us on plane in under three seconds and managed just a hair under 50 mph -- a bit faster than the 250 hp stern drive boat.

The outboard version feels lighter and nimbler than its stern drive sibling and is definitely more exciting to drive. Plus the open layout will be great for water-sports and group day trips. If I planned to spend a lot of time behind the wheel, this is the Glastron I’d get.
