Wake surfing is hugely popular and dominated by inboard V-drive purpose built boats. Until the recent advent of Volvo’s forward-facing stern drive, if you wanted to surf you didn’t really have any other choice.

As an early adopter of Volvo’s Forward Drive, Regal developed a surf system with three primary elements that take advantage of the stern drive’s capabilities: large Wake Worx surf tabs control the heel angle of the boat to help shape the wake, three ballast bags totalling 1,000 pounds, combine with the Forward Drive’s trim control to produce a substantial wave and the intuitive RegalVue touch screen display provides control of the tabs, tanks and boat speed, with custom settings for individual surfers. The result is a long, surprisingly clean wave that can be shaped to suit different surfing needs. The tabs allow five-second wave transitions while LED lights on the transom indicate which side to surf on and will blink to indicate transitions.

Standard on the 21 RX Surf is Regal’s electric PowerTower which provides a high tow point for wake-boarding. It folds down to the windshield at the touch of a button for low bridges or trailering and will help keep the rain off in a pinch. There are two cockpit layouts available. Arena style bench seating is standard and offers the most storage, but an optional passenger bucket seat is nice for cruising and sightseeing. Either layout provides L-shaped seating in the rear of the cockpit with plenty of storage under seats.

Our test boat had the optional Seagrass mat in the cockpit which is stain resistant and soft on the feet. A centre walk through to the swim platform is flanked by handy flip-up rumble seats for lounging by the water.

Regal’s FasTrac hulls are known for their speed and efficiency and with Volvo’s Forward Drive, we were astonished by how well this boat handled. With surf capabilities and true sport boat handling, this is a very versatile bowrider.
