The new 255 Open ID adds tons of fun to Scarab’s centre console lineup, with twin Rotax power and a host of innovative features. This Identity 255’s two-tone Black/Denim Gelcoat with 3D Impulse graphics really stand out…literally. The raised graphics act like a fender, helping to protect the boat from scuffs.

The helm is cleanly laid out and the optional LCD Touch Screen Command Centre provides split-screen access to engine, navigation and infotainment systems. It’s complex enough to take some getting used to, but bright enough to see in direct sunlight. The triple-wide helm seat is contoured and well-padded for comfort. The centre cushion drops down for standing but the side cushions remain in place to provide lateral support for aggressive manoeuvres.

The forward part of the console has an integrated seat and flips up on two gas assist struts to gain access to more storage or the optional head. A U-shaped bow lounge seats six with removable back rests converting either side into a forward facing lounge. There’s plenty of storage under the seats, with a dedicated spot for two portable coolers. A large in-floor ski locker is big enough to hold several waterskis or wakeboards. The deck is covered with snap-in EVA mats.

At the stern, a unique tailgate drops down on gas struts to form a large swim platform. Innovative lounge seating is found over the engine bay. Four slide-in backrests can be positioned to allow any combination of forward or aft facing seating on top of the engine hatch. Removing the backrests creates a large sunpad, while removing the cushions creates a large casting platform.

With 500 horsepower pushing less than 4,000 pounds, the 255 Open ID gets on plane in less than three seconds and topped out at 53 mph. Mild banking and a centred driving position provide some isolation from centrifugal forces in turns. Even in two foot waves, wide open at full lock there’s noise but not much drama.
