There is no mistaking the STX 2050 as a tournament-ready mutli-species fishing boat. Especially the Team Starcraft model I was out on with the custom graphics. Even sitting on the trailer in the parking lot where we met up with Team Starcraft pro Greg Yarbrough, it looked like you could catch fish right there.

With a 250-horsepower Evinrude ETEC G2 this thing scoots! The holeshot knocks you back in your seat and there’s very little bow rise.

Out on Lake Erie and in a semi-sheltered bay on a windy day, we kicked out some planer boards and tried our luck as Yarbrough gave me the once over of the boat.

“The big changes with the new models started last year,” he explained as he used the remote around his neck to adjust the trolling motor path. “Those are the ability to put an in-dash fish finder GPS combination like this Lowrance HDS9, we’ve got the BRP Pro-Can gauges here, we’ve got the automotive fishing on top of the console caps ldquo; just give it a different look. We’ve got a nice little tackle tray feature there on the passenger side, which you can pull out for quick access when you’re trolling to get your baits. It’s just a really nice feature.”

Walking between the consoles you find a ton of storage on the large bow casting platform. More than enough room to have, probably, 20 Plano 3700-style tackle boxes. There’s also a bait well up here which is great for vertical jig fishing so you don’t have to run back to the livewell to access your bait bucket.

A simple, but clever, design is the cut-out elastic mesh holders where you can store six or seven planer boards on both sides of the bow. If you fish with them you know the shape makes storing them a pain as they chew up a lot of real estate. Not anymore.

The port bow command centre allows you to tilt your main engine up or down and there are switches for livewell, baitwell, courtesy lights and battery checks as well.

“We’ve got re-enforced gunwales underneath the gunwale of the boat so you have plenty of stability to mount downriggers like you see at the back,” Yarbrough explained showing off the track system.

This boat was kitted out with a ton of rod holders, tool holders and even another Lowrance HDS unit.

Yarbrough summed this boat up perfectly: “We really thought this boat out, this boat is built by fisherman for fisherman.”

It shows.
